Over a period 31 years Coach Brent Holmes has touched the lives of many soccer, basketball & baseball players. In his 29 years as a soccer coach he had an estimated 435 players. Four of them happened to be his children- Mary Beth, Margaret, Katie & Alex. Some years included coaching two teams per season. His main goal was never to win but instead enjoy the game & for his players to have fun. Brent shared with me a range of fond memories such as 3 year old Margaret refusing to play the game but rather playing with the grass, Alex’s team pretending to be the airplanes that flew overhead during practices & watching the bond that Katie & her friends shared grow on the field.
Brent found it most rewarding to be their coach but more than that to see players & their parents return seasons after season, year after year to be lead by him on the field. Even after aging out of the YMCA’s soccer program former players would return to support Coach Brent. Most of all Brent put a premium on the relationship with his players, their families & even opposing coaches before the amount of wins in a season.
In the spring of 2017 Brent finished his final season coaching just weeks before his youngest gradated from high school. Soon after he was awarded Volunteer of the Year from the Alex W. Spears III YMCA. A well deserved honor after many years of service.
For 13 years my sister, Lauren, & I have had the privilege of calling Brent “our coach”. Brent & his family have been very close family friends for all these years & I can say with confidence that Lauren nor I would be the same without his guidance & leadership. And to that I say a very heartfelt thank you!
