A year ago, Sara Jensen needed birthday gifts for her nephews. However being on a limited budget money was tight. Being a beginner seamstress Sara needed something easy to create. She started out designing incredible bow ties. It never dawned on her that Family Ties, Sara’s home based business, would be the result. After posting to social media she suddenly found herself with multiple orders coming through. From there Sara was hired by friends and family to create blankets, burp clothes, hair bows, you name it! On multiple occasions during the year she donates bow ties to Capturing Hopes Photography to be used in portraits of NICU & PICU babies & other causes dear to her heart.
When I met Sara she shared her story of how she came to create Ugly Little Monsters. I knew right then that I wanted to feature her as one of my upcoming Hometown Heroes because of the work she is doing for children with anxiety & other mental health issues.
“A while back my four year old daughter was having night terrors. She was seeing monsters in her dreams, & the poor thing was scared to sleep. One day I asked her to draw the monsters for mommy, she quickly hopped to it!! I took her drawings & created a Ugly Little Monsters, something she could touch & feel, & to show her that her monsters weren't so scary!!”
Sara’s oldest daughter reaped the most benefit from her little creations! She has severe anxiety disorder so we gave her a small pen & pad to go with her monster. Every night she was to write her wishes & worries & put them in her monsters mouth. Once zipped shut, the worries could not get out & the monster ate them!! After insuring that her daughter is asleep she sneaks into her room & remove the worries from her monster. One night she found something disturbing in the monsters mouth. She was being bullied on the play ground. She quickly got the incident taken care of the situation. So, in hopes to help others with anxiety, bullying, & to just bring comfort and joy to others, Ugly Little Monsters were born!!
“Sara Jensen defines a stay-at-home ‘successful’ mom. She has three of the most beautiful, well-behaved & most importantly, HAPPY little girls I have ever met. How she finds time to be a successful mother as well as a successful business woman is beyond my comprehension.” says close friend Christina Peterman.
“Each monster is unique, & imperfect, just as God created us & are geared to children but adorned by all!! We haven't been creating the monsters very long but they have already brought smiles to so many faces young & old alike! Ugly Little Monsters aren't just for worries!! They can hold your prayers, your wishes, your dreams, your passions, messages to loved ones, pacifiers, gift cards, my kids hide their candy and favorite rocks in theirs.” -Sara Jensen, creator
